The Multi-Actor Platform on Land Governance and Responsible Agricultural Investment in Liberia (MAP Liberia Land Platform), in collaboration with land sector stakeholders, will hold a two-day roundtable meeting at a local hotel in Monrovia from May 29-30, 2025. During this meeting, participants will review and reflect on the successes and challenges of the second national land conference in Gompa City, Nimba County, in 2024 and begin preliminary planning for the next conference.
According to a release, the review and planning meeting will specifically focus on reviewing the recommendations made at the second National Land Conference in Gompa City, Nimba County, highlighting achievements, challenges, and constraints. It will also develop actionable plans for implementing the previous recommendations, complete with clear timelines. Additionally, the conference will create a detailed action plan for the third conference in 2026, assigning responsibilities and establishing specific deadlines for each task.
The two-day session is expected to gather over 100 participants from diverse institutions, including the government of Liberia, national and international development partners, civil society organizations, community-based organizations, traditional and religious leaders, youth, individuals with disabilities, and other state and non-state actors.
It can be recalled that from September 24th to 27th, 2024, stakeholders convened in Gompa, Nimba County for the second national land conference. The purpose of the conference was to assess the progress, challenges, and lessons learned from implementing the recommendations made during the first conference. The event resulted in the creation of the “Gompa Declaration,” which included five key recommendations:
- Promote ADR as an effective tool to resolve land conflicts involving women, youth, and people with disabilities;
- Promote access to capital to enable women to utilize land they gain access to for investment.
- To improve data on customary land formalization, expand Customary Land Management Intervention Tool (CLMIT) to (1) provide feedback mechanisms on the status of documents submitted for approval; (2) allow for data entry on potential conflict hotspots by CSOs; 3) Include GIS information on other categories of Land; and 4) Focus on land use plan;
- Develop a broadened national land conference organizing committee, comprising government, CSOs, and international development partners to work with the MAP Liberia Land Platform secretariat, in ensuring consistent follow-up of current resolutions and future conference planning activities. The terms of reference of such a committee will be initiated by the MAP Platform working in concert with other stakeholders; and,
- Establish an inclusive Technical Working Group to review and validate the Customary Land Formulation steps that CSOs and the Government will use.
